SOME 20 lion dance troupes will provide the ‘roar’ during the Pesta Pulau Pinang month in December.

The troupes will be competing for honours at the National Lion Dance Championship to be held for the first time in Penang at Dewan Milenium in Kepala Batas on Dec 21 and 22.

The winning troupe will take home RM3,000 while the first and second runners-up will get RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively.

Penang Tourism Development, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the participating troupes would, among others, perform stunts on high poles.

He said the championship, which is jointly organised by the state government and Persatuan Sukan dan Kebudayaan Tionghua Kepala Batas, would be held on the mainland because most Pesta events would be held on the island.

“The competition is not confined to the Chinese but open to other communities as well,” he told a press conference at his office in Komtar.

Law said it would cost RM70,000 to organise the championship.

The state government would fund about RM5,000 to RM10,000 while the remaining amount would be raised through private sector sponsorship.

Law said other events to be held during Pesta Pulau Pinang were a Floral Fest at the Botanic Gardens from Nov 29 to Dec 7, Miss Pesta at Red Rock Hotel on Dec 5, International Scrabble Youth Tournament at City Bayview Hotel on Dec 10 and 11, Dragon Boat Invitation Race on Dec 6 and 7 in the sea off Queensbay Mall and Mr Pesta Beach on Dec 14 at Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel.

“There will also be a musical parade at Gurney Drive with artistes singing the oldies on floats on Dec 27, a mini Go Kart race at Esplanade on Dec 28 and the year end countdown at the Esplanade, Queensbay Mall and Autocity,” he said.

Law said the various programmes were aimed at attracting local and foreign tourists to visit Penang.

He also said there would be chartered flights from Finland in December carrying 240 tourists who would stay in Penang for14 days.
