Big talent at little market

THE monthly Little Penang Street Market has become synonymous with local artistic talent, serving as a platform for local aspiring dancers and musicians to showcase their skills and abilities.

Held on the last Sunday of every month at Upper Penang Road, the street market features a host of local craft stalls selling everything from antiques to handmade trinkets, as well as The Space, a stage that highlights culture and creativity unique to Penang.

This month’s performances were an eclectic mix of music and dance, ranging from the traditio-nal tones of the kompang to the powerful vocals of upcoming si-ngers mixed with electrifying moves of street dancing.

First up was the ‘Kumpulan Kompang Pusaka Anak Rebana’ from Balik Pulau, which rendered traditional Malay tunes.

It caught the gaze of curious foreigners eager for a taste of local culture.

Then it was the turn of Penang’s very own Maya Hanum, a female vocalist still in college, to grace the stage. Her soothing melodies were such a hit that the crowd erupted into chants of encore after the allotted time was up.

Classical Indian tunes followed, with the Hamid Khan Group plucking away mesmeric tones on the sitar, before turning the stage over to the day’s highlight, the Capoeira, performed by a group of local students.

Named after the Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, games, music and dance, the group wowed the crowd with their display of acrobatic play, feints and an extensive use of sweeps, kicks and headbutts.

“This is what the street market is all about, showcasing the creativity of local talents. We believe there’s a lot of hidden talents in Penang who never get the chance to showcase their abilities; so we’re pleased to provide a platform and bring them to the public eye,” said entertainment coordinator James Lochhead.

Among the other performances on the day were the tenor-like Voce, the musical medleys of Areca Centre for Performing Arts and the jazz ballads of Tanjung Jammers.

There was also a sun gazing session hosted by the Universiti Sains Malaysia Astronomy Club.

A fundraising dinner will be held on Aug 28 at the G Hotel, and will feature a similar mix of exci-ting entertainment.

Among the top bands slated to perform at the dinner is ‘Akash A’.

“The street market runs on a shoestring budget; so if we can raise enough funds from the dinner, it will keep us going for at least another year,” Lochhead added.
