Date: 6th of February Venue: Padang Esplanade Time: 6pm- 11pm Penang’s famous cultural tradition and celebration “Chap Goh Meh” will be held on the 6th of February at Padang Esplanade. In Hokkein, Chap Goh Meh literally means the fifteenth in the Chinese Lunar New Year. It marks the first full moon of the Lunar New Year and the Chinese community celebrates this happy auspicious occasion with various activities. In Penang, throwing of tangerines into the sea is an important tradition. Traditionally, unmarried women Nyonya would toss tangerines into the sea. While doing so, hopeful unmarried men would try their luck at catching these tangerines in order to meet their future spouse. The night will start with a food fair with an array of delicious Penang food. At 7.30pm, Chief Minister of Penang , Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Lim Guan Eng, will have the honour of throwing the first tangerine into the sea. After that, enjoy the exciting performances lined up which includes cultural Malay, Chinese and Indian dance , Astro’s Lau Han Jie and a rare Lion Dance On Stilts performance. The night ends with a dazzling display of fireworks across the skyline of Esplanade. Everyone regardless of background is invited to join this unique cultural celebration.
