The much anticipated George Town Festival is back again this year with various activities and performances from various countries all over the world, performed right here in George Town!

The gala opening will be happening this Friday, 15th of July at Fort Cornwallis with a majestic performance; SILAT- Our Heritage for The World. Helmed by award-winning producer/director Saw Teong Hin, of Puteri Gunung Ledang fame, production designer Liew Kung-Yu, lighting designer Dorothy P’ng and choreographer Aida Redza the production is a hybrid of theatrics infused with traditional music and contemporary visuals.

Saw has woven in a story that revolves around the lives of Malay warriors — Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Lekiu, Hang Lekir and Hang Kasturi — who will be played by young performers Muhamad Al Hafiz Md.Sani (Hang Tuah), Mohd Fazali Sharif (Hang Jebat), Mohd Firdaus Mustapha Kamal (Hang Lekiu), Shahrul Afizam Mohamad (Hang Lekir) and Izzardzafli Padzir (Hang Kasturi). With 25 performers, the show will also feature six silat masters.

The majestic martial art of Silat was practiced by Malay warriors from the dawn of Malay civilization some 2000 years ago. The Gala Opening will be graced by TYT Tun Dato' Seri Utama (DR) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas.
