As part of the line-ups of George Town Heritage Celebrations 2016, the team is delighted to present you an opportunity to learn and experience a significant part of our cultural heritage from the people who know best and are amongst the traditional practitioners of the art.

1. Yoga

As a 5000-year old ancient science originated from India, Yoga has become one of the most popular practices being adopted by people seeking health. There are a number of yoga studios and teachers offering a variety of classes in Penang.

Madam Siva, from Nattukotai Nagarathar Heritage Society, who started practicing yoga since young. She has 30 years of experiences in teaching Hatha Yoga, will be conducting a beginner yoga class - this will be a slow-paced, very beginner yoga class for those new to yoga.

Class Description:
This 1 hour beginner class introduces the fundamental principles of alignment and breath work in a flow of postures linked together by the breath. Students will be introduced to meditation and sun salutation, followed by yoga postures through step-by- step verbal description and demonstration. If you have never tried yoga, this is the class for you, designed to meet the needs of those new to yoga as well as those seeking continued understanding of basic yoga poses.

2. Nillaikalakki Silambam

Nillaikalakki Silambam (Nillai means posture and kalakki means to disturb or shuffle) as a common demonstration in Southern India, is an authenthic art which deals with a stick called Silambamboo (1.68 meters long).

Mr. Amuthan and his team from Persatuan Nilaikalakki Silambam (PENSILAM) will be sharing the basic techniques of Nilaikalakki Silambam which offers participants, even with no prior formal martial art training or knowledge, a hands-on experience in this ancient martial art.

Class Description
In this two-hour introductory class, students will be exposed to the Nillaikalakki Silambam stick spinning introduction, followed by stick spinning with walking co-ordination as well as smooth spinning techniques. The wrist twirling, geometrical maneuvering art together with the rhythmic and agile sequences of leg movement in nature will enable human blood circulation to flow evenly and strengthen the nerve system.

3. Silat Kapi

Silat Kapi is a close-range battle art with origins from Penang and has been widely spread in Malaysia throughout the years. The art of KAPI combines skill from wooden stick (KAYU in Malay) and short-handled trident (TEKPI). Wooden stick used in Silat Kapi ranges between 19 to 21 inches, and of which its end will be tied to a string that can parry attack from sharp weapon like sword or knife.

Silat Kapi is founded by Cikgu Haja Mohaideen bin Hj. Abu Backer, from Penang in year 1999.

Class Description:
This 2-hour class will start with a short lecture on SILAT and introduction of KAPI, followed by fundamental practice of bare- hand combat skills. After the sessions participant will understand the basic of silat kapi self-defence method.

4. Tai Chi

Tai Chi is one of the major branches of traditional Chinese martial arts.The essential principles of Tai Chi are based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism, which stresses the natural balance of 'yin' and 'yang'. This "internal" or "soft" martial art is non-competitive, gentle, and generally slow-paced.

Master Lee Yean Poy and his team from Sun Wui Wui Koon will be sharing some basic techniques of Tai Chi martial art.

Class Description
Within the 2 hours' class, participants can expect to learn basic theory of Tai Chi, followed by fundamental hand and feet movement, as well as simplified standard 24 Movement Tai Chi Form.
