Venue: THE TOP@Komtar
THE TOP@Komtar officially opened its doors to the public amidst much fanfare. Held at Komtar, Penang, the event was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi, who was represented by the Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz. Other VIPs in attendance included the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng; Chairman of Only World Group (OWG) Y.M. Dato’ Dr. Tengku Rethwan bin Tengku Mansor; Founder and CEO of OWG Y. Bhg. Dato’ Sri Richard Koh as well as Group Chief Operating Officer of OWG Dato’ Jean Koh.
This momentous event is the culmination of three years of tireless efforts to breathe new life to Penang’s beloved landmark and bring the shine back to the state. YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri expressed his optimism that THE TOP will not only provide an additional reason for local and international tourists to put Penang on their must-visit list but also become a key contributor to the state’s economy.
With the opening of THE TOP, the stage is set for the revitalisation of an important icon and tourist destination and, ultimately, the nation’s socioeconomic development. There is a huge potential in Penang and with this project of bringing in more tourists
THE TOP houses Penang’s largest indoor theme attractions. Among them are the first-in-Penang “Window of THE TOP” that includes a Rainbow Skywalk on Komtar’s rooftop and an Observatory Deck on Level 65, both of which offer gorgeous panoramic views of George Town and beyond.
Other attractions include the Jurassic Research Center with over 200 life-sized prehistoric creatures, Asia’s first 7D Discovery Motion Theater and the Ocean Explorer which allows you to experience life in the ocean without getting wet. There are several attractions that pay homage to Penang’s heritage and culture as well, namely the Penang State Gallery, Tongkat Ali King centre and Durian The King of Fruits showcase.
In addition to the theme attractions, THE TOP also boasts a host of fine dining restaurants and F&B outlets, such as TOP View Restaurant & Lounge which, located on Level 59, is the highest restaurant in Penang featuring unrivalled views of the city; Coco Cabana Bar & Bistro on the tower’s rooftop; Grand Imperial Restaurant that serves exquisite Chinese cuisine; Umi Restaurant that offers authentic Malay cuisine in a traditional setting; Japan Food Street that serves a variety of authentic, delicious Japanese food; Richdad, which has the best of breakfast and deli foods from all over the world and OnlyMee, with slurp-worthy noodle bowls and steaming rice pots.
The development of THE TOP began as a public-private partnership between OWG and the Penang state government back in 2013 in a bid to revitalise the iconic Komtar building. Seeing a vision that was developed three years ago came into fruition today has been an amazing experience. THE TOP is a must-visit tourist attraction, and subsequently boost Penang’s profile in the international landscape.
