BY CK LAM Cendol and Ice Kacang, our local dessert has been selected as the No.4 Must Eat hawker food through an online poll on the VisitPenang website in 2009. Ice Kacang Many people will agree that Kek Seng coffee shop which is in business for the past sixty years is the best place for ice kacang. The ice kacang comes with its colorful signature homemade agar-agar jelly and durian/chocolate ice cream besides other ingredients of sweet red bean and jagung (creamy corn). The delightful cooling plate of ice kacang with additional two scoops of ice cream cost RM3.50.
Besides the plate of ice kacang, you can order their homemade durian ice cream on its own. The ice cream has a slightly grainy texture, very flavorful and is available all-year round unlike the durian fruit which is only available at certain time of the year.
This two shoplot coffee shop still retained part of the ‘kocha’ (old school days) look with the all-wood booths sitting places. They look pretty much the same as it was many years ago. The shop is located along Penang Road in Georgetown.
This delicious cooling sweet dessert cost RM1.70 is served on a bowl of shaved ice top with sweet red beans, cendol (green strands made of green pea flour), fresh coconut milk and gula Melaka (brown sugar). Most customers would just stand around the stall eating the cendol whereas some would opt to sit in the nearby coffee shop.
