Penang Curry Mee has been selected as the No.5 Must Eat hawker food through an online poll on the VisitPenang website in 2009.

There are numerous Curry Mee stalls in Penang and each stall has its own version of soup and ingredients. Some have their coconut based stock reddish while some comes in a lighter pale color version, at times known as White Curry Mee. The basic ingredients would be pig’s blood, cockles (sie hum), taupok and cuttlefish. There are also different kinds of add-on such as curry chicken, fish balls, gizzard, chicken feet and fish cakes.

These are some of the Curry Mee stalls around town. First on the list would be the delicious bowl of Curry Mee from Peace & Joy Coffee Shop located in the corner of China Street and Queen Street. The basic bowl of Curry Mee cost RM2.50 without prawns and RM3 with prawns. Intensely flavored curry chicken, drumstick, gizzard and liver can be added-on with prices varies from RM1.50 – RM2.50. Business Hour : 7am – 3pm.

Drop over to the stall at Air Itam market to try the classic flavorful Curry Mee managed by two sisters. Seating places in this stall located right beside the bridge is limited. Customers have to sit on low stools (bangku) in front of the stall and hold the piping hot bowl of Curry Mee with their hands. Indeed an experience and it does bring back the simple life of the hawkers in the earlier years. Prices vary from RM2.50 to RM3.50 depending on the size. Business Hour : Breakfast only.

Another popular stall would be the Tuai Pui Curry Mee at Weld Quay. Added with extra pieces of curry chicken, gizzard and chicken feet, this stall has been a favorite for many locals. The hot and spicy soup is aromatic and an additional dollop of chili paste adds in a distinctive fragrance! Business Hour : Lunch till evening.
