BY CK LAM Chicken Rice is among one of the popular dish in Penang. It is not difficult to find a stall as there will be one at most coffeshop. Among one in town serving deliciously flavourful chicken rice is at Kheng Pin Cafe located at the junction of Sri Bahari Road and Penang Road. The poached chicken is deliciously prepared, a firm smooth skin with a layer of gelatine underneath and tender juicy meat.
The chicken is presented on a bed of sliced cucumber, sprinkled with soy sauce, sesame oil, and garnished with chopped scallions and fresh ginger strips. Fresh ginger strips are hard to come by these days. Together with the chilli sauce, they rounded up the meal beautifully.
The owner has recently opened an outlet at Lorong Selamat and it is run by his son selling equally tasty and smooth poached chicken with flavourful rice. It is great seeing the young man taking up the trade and continues with the legacy. The stall by the name of Foong’s Hainan Chicken Rice is located in Mid Town Cafe. This cafe is located diagonally across the famous Lau Yee Char Koay Teow stall at Kafe Heng Huat.
Every piece of the chicken is just as wonderfully tender and moist, and the smooth silky skin was just awesome. The son has definitely learnt the trick of the trade.
The rice is fluffy and flavourful as it is infused with the chicken broth.
Customers will not have to scratch their heads over parking lots as there are a few private carparks in Lorong Selamat. This chicken rice stall is open for business on Sunday, which makes it very convenient for most office workers.
