Public Cafe is just another neighbourhood coffee shop in the pleasant surroundings of Gurney Drive. This coffee shop is a favorite spot as it has a stall serving up both delicious yet reasonable seafood noodles and porridge.

Take a pick from the striking mix of ingredients and a choice of several types of noodles.  The price varies according to the seafood ingredients, with pawns, crabs, paddy frogs (tin kai/chui kay) and varieties of fish.

We ordered a number of dishes from the available range, starting with the crab noodle. The claypot came boiling hot filled with thick beehoon (rice vermicelli), pieces of crab, cabbage, choy sum and garnished with spring onions and fried garlic. The clay pot kept the whole dish warm...

It’s a play on words: come to the alfresco poolside Pinang Bar at the Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, and have one (or more) of their yummy cocktails whilst watching the gorgeous sunset in the horizon. And indulge in a few of their new Penang and Thai-style tapas dishes at the same time.

Although they have only recently been introduced, the idea has apparently taken off, appealing to both...

With a unique garden setting, surrounded by lusty green plants and a cosy ambience, Ferringhi Coffee Garden is the place to go for a hearty breakfast. This restaurant located in Batu Ferringhi is owned by Richard Long of the neighbouring Ferringhi Garden Restaurant.

A good dish to start the day would be baked omelette and toast. The thick, charcoal-grilled toast has a nice crunch, but it’s the tender omelette with mixed mushrooms, beef bacon, chickpea, edamame (boiled...

helen-curryBy Helen Ong

In the UK, Friday nights is Curry Night. To celebrate the end of a hard week of work, Brits like to go down to the boozer for a pint or two of their favourite tipple, and thence to their local curry house for a Chicken Tikka Masala, a Madras or, if they’re feeling in a particularly masochistic mood, a Vindaloo or two. That sort of northern Indian cooking was something I really missed when I came back to live in Penang.

However, I’m delighted to say that this is no longer...

Sigi’s Bar and Grill Beach Bar, an extension of the popular Sigi’s Bar and Grill on the Beach opened recently. Standing right on the beach in Golden Sands Resort along Batu Feringgi, Sigi’s Bar and Grill Beach Bar, is as authentic as a beach bar can get.

This relaxed resort-style bar can accommodate 60 persons and a circular bar counter that seats 10 persons. There is a star-shaped tent sheltering the bar which features bean bags and cushions on the open air, breezy...
