Steak Frites in the heart of historic George Town, Penang is a great restaurant that fits the current trend towards nostalgia. The restaurant is part of 23 Love Lane, a beautifully restored boutique heritage hotel.

We had a meal at the casual and charming dining room decorated with soft lighting, old antiques, wooden tables and booth seating.

The steak takes pride of place in the simple and short menu. The grilled Australian beef tenderloin is served in melting cafe de Paris butter, along with a host of crispy fries, French baguette and garden salad.

The marbled beef marinated with salt, pepper, Dijon mustard and Lea & Perrin sauce comes with different preferences of sizes, priced at RM49 for 150g and RM60 for...

A trip up to Penang Hills, or Bukit Bendera as it is now known, used to be synonymous with not just cooler air and leisurely walks.

Malaysians being Malaysians, we just had to find somewhere to sit down and eat, and nowhere was it better than in the old horseshoe-shaped food court a stone’s throw from the Upper Station.

Sadly, this historical old building has disappeared, and like the funicular railway itself, replaced by something modern — in its place stands the...

Occupying three refurbished colonial shop houses with facades facing Beach Street and Victoria Street, China House is one of the busiest dining and lifestyle outlets within the Unesco heritage zone of George Town.

The cafe serves all-day breakfasts, lunches and dinners with its five different dining areas besides a wine store, art spaces and a venue for live shows.

At the casual Kopi C, there are many dishes to savour alongside an array of rich cakes and pastries displayed on a...

This iconic kopitiam in Penang Road was the place families headed for when they wanted to tuck into good Penang hawker food.

I remember being brought here many times as a child, when the promise of an ice-kacang dessert with a scoop of their home-made durian ice cream was enough to keep us kids well-behaved for... oh, at least a couple of hours!

It’s one of those old double-fronted shops which are, sadly and inexorably, disappearing. Along one of the walls are high-backed...

There are several iconic banana leaf rice eateries in George Town and one definitely worth checking out is Traditional Indian Banana Leaf Rice. Most Penangites would not have realized this eatery although it is located in the UNESCO heritage zone.

This eatery also known to many as Muthu was once located in Lumut Lane (Lorong Lumut). It has since shifted to a shop house in the neighbouring Acheen Street (Lebuh Acheh). There are a few small tables leaning against the wall and...
