We are so lucky here in Penang. There are so many places which have a history to them. One of them is the Kong Thai Lai Coffee Shop in Hutton Lane. A visit there is like taking a step back in history.

This humble coffee shop is a true relic of days gone by. Established over 100 years ago and now passed on to current proprietor Gary Tan via his grandfather and father, it was, and still is to a certain extent, a centre of the community. Local residents, regardless of race or religion, pop in to escape the debilitating heat of the afternoon sun, relishing the casual, friendly atmosphere. There’s no need for expensive aircons; the shady interior is kept cool by ceiling fans and the thick tiled walls.

Located on the first floor of Tesco Sri Tanjung Pinang, this “open” outlet is charming and neat, laid out with antique tables and chairs which Diana Chin and business partner Peggy Tan scoured the island to find. Cutlery holders on each table give the place an air of old-worldliness which is a feat in itself, considering it is right in the middle of a busy, bustling modern shopping centre.

As the Hakkas (Khek) originated from land-locked Central China...

Recently opened in Straits Quay, Nyonya Breeze Desire carries on the tradition of Peranakan cuisine associated with Penang. The menu offers dishes of large and small portions which include nasi ulam, inche kabin, sambal goreng, asam pedas and braised meat.

Nyonya Breeze Desire had the food prepared with great attention to detail, balancing flavours and taste. The jiu hu char or stir-fried sengkuang had mushroom, carrot and dried squid. It is served with fresh lettuce and sambal...

Here in Penang, we have all-year-round sun, sea, and beach, so one place might be one of our splendid...
